Hometown: Omaha, NE
Profession: UFC Fighter and ESPN MMA Analyst
Biography:
Anthony Smith is a retired American mixed martial artist and current MMA analyst for ESPN. Born July 26, 1988, in Corning, Iowa, he competed professionally for more than a decade and a half, ultimately spending the bulk of his career in the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division.
Smith turned pro in 2008 and worked his way up through regional Midwest promotions before signing with the UFC in 2013. Originally a middleweight, he broke out after moving to 205 pounds in 2018, stringing together a series of finishes against Rashad Evans, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir that put him squarely in title contention. In March 2019, he challenged Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight championship at UFC 235, going the full five rounds in one of the most demanding fights of his career.
Known throughout his career for his durability, finishing instinct, and willingness to take any fight the promotion offered, Smith earned multiple post-fight performance bonuses and ended his run as one of the most respected veterans in the division. His overall record was 39-22.
Since hanging up his gloves, he has transitioned into a full-time role as an MMA analyst for ESPN, where he brings a fighter’s perspective to broadcasts, weekly studio coverage, and event commentary. He also continues to co-host the popular “Believe You Me” podcast with former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping.
Smith remains based in Omaha, Nebraska, where he trains and mentors fighters at Genesis Training Center.
